Beech?

I think that these are Beech leaves, the tree(s) they were on were a good size, (but not like some of the huge ones found in the older parts of the NF). At a guess they were at least 10m tall with trunk diameters up to about 400mm. The puzzle for me is that there was no Beech mast on the ground, are these trees too young to produce fruits, or are they something else entirely?

They are indeed fresh Beech leaves. Often little mast is produced in alternate years or maybe as you suggest the trees are on the young side.

I had a look online and even published sources have different opinions about when the beech reaches maturity. Some saying as little as 40 years (Photobiology of Higher Plants) and others stating that it's 60 years (Trees: Their Natural History). I imagine that it differs between species of beech and the environment that they're growing in. This website advises that little seed it produced before the tree is 60 years old: www.coedcymru.org.uk/handbook.htmlLovely photos, Ayjay.

Thanks tj, that's very useful,it's something I'd intended to check out but as with so many other things it's not been done yet.
It's not easy being retired, so many things to do, I always used to wonder how I found time to go to work, and I still don't know.
