Insect ID and what was it doing

While sitting outside this beetle? landed on the table I had difficulty taking photo as it kept dashing about then seemed to jump in the air and land on it's back. The sequence was do a little run, leap, land on back, flip itself upright again and repeat. Did not know what it was and could not understand what it was doing.
