After staying at the allotment well into darkness loading and unloading the van I managed to pick up a hitch-hiker. My first sign of life waking up from the winter is a moth, Angle Shades. Nothing rare but nice to see all the same.

Signs here have been scarce but finally the crocuses are starting to appear. Later than some of you have reported but that's usual for us. When we lived a few miles further East, we found that early flowering trees and shrubs were always a full 3 weeks earlier flowering in Carlisle than in our garden. Amazing what difference just 10 miles and a few feet of elevation can make.

Saw a starling gathering nesting material this morning, and flying with it up to the neighbour's drainpipe. They've nested up behind it for the past two or three years now, (the starlings, not the neighbours. )

Crocuses are flowering really well now. The snowdrops are a bit behind; the ones in Inverewe Gardens are doing very well, but Inverewe is a bit different from the average, they even have a couple of Rhododendrons coming into flower. However, my sign of Spring today was sitting out the front with a cup of tea with no need for a jacket. Dave

heavy frost this morning and thick layer of ice on the birdbath, but the sun is out now and it certainly looks Spring-like out there.

I can understand that Nelly. I like winter and snow (hill walking is so much easier when the ground is frozen) but if you need or want to get somewhere it can cause a problem. The drive here is very steep and if there has been a freeze or snow overnight then getting the car out is not a good idea until things have improved. However, at this time of the year it is unlikely there will be much more cold/snowy weather - OMG what have I said This is my sign of spring for today - Dave

Keeping fingers cross and a couple of sunny days, albeit -3, does not seem to have stopped the birds chasing each other and singing their hearts out.

First lawnmowers of the year spotted here - a cacophony of mowers plus a neighbour revving his kit-car engine - Spring has definitely arrived!
