One of my all time favourite birds is the Hoopoe and one was found near Kingswinford, in the West Midlands, a few days ago. I have seen loads abroad and quite a few here in Britain so wasn't going to go for it thinking it wouldn't stay for long in this miserable weather. In fact it is still there and yesterday (Saturday) I decided at mid-day to drive the 50 miles for it. My sat nav said I would arrive at 1.15pm but the traffic was bad and I arrived at 2.40pm in torrential rain and a leaden grey sky. As I got out the car I was welcomed by a local birder that I have met a few times only to be told that it appeared to have gone to roost as it was so dark. I did the five minute walk and there were six birders still there and none was sure where it was. I had my dog with me and he looked absolutely miserable in this weather but after about 15 minutes the rain stopped and it got slightly brighter. Thankfully the bird flew out and despite the extremely dark conditions I managed a few shots of it. Mind you I had to up my ISO to 6400 to get those shots so they are a bit grainy, plus I have had to do a lot of work on the levels to take the darkness out of the photos. 240 Hoopoe.
