What other forum sub-categories would be useful, do you think?

Looks like it has been added hank. How about "Weather". If there is a "What's your weather like" thread, I can advertise it on Castaways, and maybe entice the meteorological types over.

Thanks for that, Deb- there's been a few times I couldn't get the old archived WaB page to load...I am getting worried that it might vanish all together. I remember that the photography forum was very popular, but because this forum can't support very large file sizes I'm not sure how well it would work here. Also, there doesn't seem to be an option to find photos once they've been posted, (wasn't there a 'My Photos' bar at WaB? It wasn't always easy to find, but I seem to recall it being there.) We might have to have one general Wildlife Photography thread, though- until such time as it becomes necessary to add more. We've been discussing adding the weather and astronomy forums- also sub-forums for plants, too. There aren't many members here yet, but what does everyone think about the community forum? I know that there were local meet-ups and events posted on there, so we can add that one, too. We'll probably leave the Outdoor activity and Environment forums until more people register and there's more demand for them. Let me know what you think!

Wild About the World and Castaways both seem to have regular posters to the weather thread. Also, have a look at what the other forums and Facebook provide and do well, and maybe concentrate on something that they might be missing. I'll have to have a think. EDIT - a walking thread might be useful. There are a lot of walkers on Castaways I reckon. Do you want me to post in Castaways and ask which types of thread they enjoyed most? That might be a start. But let me know, as I do not want to interfere too much.

That would be great, Deb- thanks...and I don't consider it interference- I would like this to be a site that provides the most interesting topics for everyone, so all suggestions are welcome!

If you want to split the insects & inverts up you could do: Arachnids (Spiders) Hymenoptera (Bees, Wasps, Ants & Sawflies) Lepidoptera (Butterfies & Moths) Coleoptera (Beetles) Crustaceans & Molluscs Diptera (True flies) Hemipteroids (Bugs) Odonata (Dragonflies & Damselflies) Orthopteroids (Crickets & Grasshoppers) Other stuff (Trichoptera, Springtails, Worms, Myriapods etc) That's how I organise anyway Nige

Getting some good suggestions, many thread ideas seem to be of the "something of the day" variety.
These types of thread are best locked to the top of the category so they never get lost at the bottom of the pile. Is this possible?

I think this has already been done with a couple of them Nige

I'll get that done with some of them tomorrow...we're gradually working our way through and adding bits and pieces as we go along, and seeing what everyone would like. PS. will make the birding list a sticky as well.

I always thought that a lot of WAB's subcategories were overkill. A forum with too much to wade through tends to put people off. I always wondered why there was a sub category for something like eggs and larvae when mammals and birds didn't have any sub categories. Anyway, all I'm saying is I think it's best to keep things simple, especially in a forums infancy.
