It's so exciting seeing so many familiar names appearing from the old Wild about Britain forum.
We do, however, want to explain that this is a new, learning experience for us- and we still hope that the old original forum might one day reappear- primarily because the loss of all the experiences and all the knowledge, (as well as the thousands of Gallery images) that had been uploaded and shared over the years is extremely saddening.
As far as forums go we are novices at this, and this is why we will need your help to make ‘WaBI’ a success. It’s still in the beginning stages as of yet, with only the most basic and wide-ranging topics that we could remember from the old boards, (and if there is a category that you would especially like to see added, (like astronomy, etc.) please let us know! Also, if any of you happen to be in touch with other Wabbers via email, please do let them know that we are here, and going to do our best to carry on!
We don't know exactly what happened to bring Wild about Britain down, but it was becoming obvious that the hacking and spam was starting to cause severe problems for the site.
So, PLEASE notify either snowlynx or rowanberry if there is ANY suspicious behaviour or spamming asap, so that we can deal with any dodgy posts as quickly as they appear. We want this forum to be safe and secure, for everyone. The fact that so many new members are appearing in such a short space of time shows how important our British wildlife is, to so many people.
Again, a very big welcome to everyone- and thanks for being here!

Thank you very much for starting this forum.
New members might have ideas for new categories, or they might have questions and problems. I wonder if you could set up a sub-category for suggestions, technical issues and forum development?

That's a good idea, Deb- we need to do that.

Rowanberry,
I have noticed a number of ex WAB members are reluctant to join WABI as there is no picture gallery. Is there a reason why there is no gallery or can one be created as the site grows.
Harold.

On this subject, someone posted in Castaways to suggest an alternative was a forum for photos. There are a few reasons why many of the Castaways will not join WABI, and the lack of a gallery is one that keeps coming up. Also, I think people just miss WAB, which is understandable. Even if you create a forum that looks and functions like WAB (which is a huge task in itself) there are many WAB experts that are still missing. Some are in Castaways, and I can see a few here, but many very notable names are missing from both. If we cannot locate them, then I do not think that a community like WAB will re-form again, which, for me, is a real shame.

We've search through the ProBoards faqs, and sadly can't find anyway to host a gallery, especially not one of the size that WaB was able to support. I know that this was a feature that so many people at WaB really liked, but we haven't been able to figure out a way to do that. Snowlynx chose this site, (ProBoards) to build the forum on because the others had much more severe restrictions- after a certain number of members joined they automatically went to a premium rate and had to be paid for, else access was denied. (I wonder if Stu started allowing ads because of forum fees? I seem to remember there being some discussion about banner ads at WaB...or was that so he could pay the web designer? I presume it did cost him to run Wild about Britain, but I'm not sure about that.) Also, this site has a good reputation of several years standing, (even won awards) and we didn't want to get this going and then have it suddenly disappear because the host (server? see, I told you I wasn't techie!) closed down. I'm sorry that people aren't joining for that reason- I'm just a simple ex-Wabber as well, and wanted to do the best that I could for everyone with my limited knowledge. We do intend to add a photography board as well, though- those threads were always popular.

I must go down to the sea again, to answer the call of the running tide, and the sea-gull crying.

Hello WABI, hello all! I was shocked to discover that WAB was no more, but delighted that like a phoenix, something has arisen from the ashes. Let's hope that we can all get out there to find something to get excited about, and to share it on this new site. I was down in Devon rockpooling at the time of the supermoon. Delighted to have found a total of nine species of crabs on one small area of rocky beach in one session....but that is a post all its own. So sorry to have lost my posts on Extreme Beachcombing, and Rockpooling reports from Devon - maybe I can repost here during the long winter nights ahead.
