They look like fungi to me, but I'm not sure I've ever heard of anything like that. Seen this afternoon, I walk along here regularly (last time was less than a week ago) and certainly don't remember seeing them then. The habitat is nothing more than a ditch with a few wider areas/pools, but it does remain wet all year. There were quite a few spread around, but only in this one pool. Size of the orange top is an average of about 10-12mm from top to bottom and about 6-8mm diameter.

Very interesting – I shall look out for it. It says here (DK Pocket Nature: Fungi) it is occasional to uncommon in S temperate Europe, on plant debris in track ruts and ditches.

I looked in another part of the Enclosure this morning (the other side of the road) and found several more, but not very widespread, I found four areas which had groups of these fungi, but they were only yards apart. Maybe a 20 yard length of a 500 yard ditch had them growing,(about the same as yesterday where I only found two close groups) and a few singletons further afield.
I'll take the camera back over there sometime in the next few days and try and get a better focus on the head, I wasn't happy with any of the pics I took yesterday, (poor light as much as anything - my stock excuse).

nice find ! not one i have been lucky enough to come across myself despite inspecting most of the local wet spots, If you're anywhere near the New Forest, I'd be happy to show you those I found. Don't know how long they'll be around for - watch this space. Got a better pic this morning, but I'm thinking there's nothing sharp about a jelly looking object, so this pic is about as sharp as I can get it, that was on a tripod and using the self-timer.

It appears up here in the Strathfillan Local Community Forest. Hey, it's everywhere, I don't think Ashgale's been looking properly. That looks quite large too, (relatively speaking).
