Could the tail of a hairy cat. It also looks like is the tail of a pine marten. I see from your profile you are not in the Highlands or south west Scotland but martens are spreading.

First thought was squirrel, then maybe not. Something feathery and quite small for sure. Look forward to hearing the answer.

I do not usually like guessing games but hey in for a penny in for a pound it does look very much like the end of a weasel’s tail, either that or the end of Davy Crockett’s hat. But re ashgale's post I was given to believe that Dormice never touch down on terra firma or leave the safety of the trees / bushes. Alan

Weasel and Pine Martin are close but it is in fact the tip of a stoat's tail Here is the preceding pic.

It didn't have the black tip one would expect of a stoat's tail?

What you see in the pic IS the black tip to the tail.

To my eyes it does not look like it has a black tip, the shade / colour of the floor covering also does not help as it is disguising the overall affect making it even more difficult to identify. Alan

I still can't see a black tip. However, I'll grant that it looks big enough to be a stoat . . . .
