I have a fascination for cloud forms but am useless at identification. I assume these are simply cumulus but in the early morning sun yesterday they seemed almost luminous and the photo hardly does justice. Alf

Is it just an effect of the photo, or do the clouds have a sort of rainbow edge, almost like a film of oil with all the colours in it? If so, they could have been nacreous clouds, which I have seen a few times and which are very beautiful. They are most often seen at dawn and dusk. I think the cause is something to do with ice crystals high up.

Another cloud phenomena - this time from 3 months ago. I believe this to be an example of "VIRGA" (trails of precipitation (fallstreaks) that don't reach the ground and are attached to the underside of a cloud)certainly the road was dry when I headed up that way a short time later. Alf

Earlier this week and on an atypically sunny day, I was taken with the number of cumulonimbus capillatus (precursors to cumulonimbus inca or "anvil" clouds) which formed throughout the day tracking South in line with the North Pennines to the East of us. Someone was getting wet but thankfully not us! I took quite a few pics but this is one from a couple of weeks ago. Of course we don't always avoid a soaking from one of these - this was bearing down on us very early one morning. Note the typical "hairy" top.

Spectacular scene - I love it. Had to take picture of this quizzical cloud earlier this week unfortunately I could not get the camera to autofocus on it and gave up trying with the cloud rapidly losing its form.

Lovely!
I must apologise for wrongly labeling one of my pics as Altocumulus undulatus - it should of course be Undulatus asperatus... I think!
