It was cloudy here last night when the lights were visible over much of northern Britain, but tonight they weren't bad from the north west. Taken from Badachro about 21:50. Dave

Nice one - I'm envious. Far too much cloud here to see anything last couple of nights.

Thanks Alf. I was lucky as I did not think there was going to be much of a show last night; the peak seems to have been Sunday night when the lights were photographed much further south than is usual. Unfortunately on Sunday night here there was heavy cloud.
Last night's display was better than the one late last year although camera sensors are much better than picking up the colour than the naked eye. Visually there was just the slightest suggestion of green but towards the northern horizon there was a milky light.

From local paper it looks like some Cumbrians got a good view a couple of nights ago - I was up and about in the early hours but obviously got the timing wrong - better luck next time I hope. Alf

I looked out again around 11pm, clear skies but didn't see anything else. According to the local news someone did see the lights the night before only about 4 miles from me.

I don't know how far south the lights appeared last night. In the village, which has street lights (but not many), I could see nothing.
Where I took the photos was a dark site(other than the lights of the village about 2 miles away across the bay) and it took some time for my eyes to adjust and see, as I mentioned above, the milky coloured light to the north (which was obvious) and the slight green colour(which wasn't).
I think further north, eg Iceland, or closer to the north magnetic pole, eg northern Canada, the chances of seeing the colours with the naked eye are much better.
Having seen the lights twice now and both times they were not visually that impressive (though last night's ones were much better than those late on last year) I think if there is a chance they might be visible, I'll be out there having a go. I've read the sensors of digital cameras are pretty good at picking up the colours.

Thanks RB, but as you'll have seen from my earlier posts there is, as least for me, a fair bit of luck involved. However, have to say it is quite satisfying to set up the camera and take a shot of something that you can't really see, and have a colourful result.

Lucky you - nice photo. Had a really clear night had been admiring the stars, but missed it - I must have been on another planet:(
