Well that's out of the way for another year! Pets, wildlife, fire services and me can rest easy again. Not many homes around here but it seemed a particularly noisy one last night. Fireworks are a lot more sophisticated and expensive these days than the few things that went whizz-bang and gave us a thrill when I was a kid in Liverpool. When I ventured out of the house this morning I was puzzled by lines of sticks in the adjacent field. Now my eyesight is not great these days and the old brain not as agile in the mornings as I would like so it was only after taking an image with the zoom lens I realised I was seeing the remains of a volley of rockets from last night. I guess they stuck into the sodden ground like arrows. The sheep in the background don't seem too bothered thankfully. Alf

Don't start me off on fireworks! We live in a tourism hot spot close to Matlock Bath and we have had fireworks every Saturday night since the illuminations started 19th September. They ended 31st October when there were more fireworks for Halloween. In fact we have had fireworks every night since the 30th October and here almost definitely, the main events will be tonight and tomorrow. I get really annoyed with them and it must affect the wildlife and the environment. I am one of those grumpy sods who think fireworks should be on the 5th November only - it was when I was a child.
You are right Alf, they are more sophisticated these days especially the firecrackers, you can actually feel the shock waves from some of them.

It's barely started here, but I fully expect the usual sound effects will continue on and off for most of the next week, there's a private school nearby which has it's own display every year and several other organised displays in the area, and many private individuals with too much money to burn.
I can tell you of an unexpected and quite frightening firework experience I had few years ago.
There is an organised firework display every Friday evening throughout the summer at Bournemouth, it's not something I ever attended but I did used to spend a lot of my spare time fishing, usually on the Hants. Avon for Barbel.
I was there well into the dark one Friday evening in early autumn, there was a long line of Poplar trees on the far bank.
As I'm watching my rod tip (and keeping my eyes peeled for the local Barn Owl)the trees on the far bank seemed to start rapidly flashing lighter and darker, my first thought was that something was wrong with my eyes, I shut them and looked again, no difference, I blinked a couple of times, no difference. Now my thoughts started to turn darker, how am I going to drive home like this, how am I going to drive to work for the next 20 years? It's surprising just how much can run through your brain in a few seconds.
Then, and only then, after probably about the longest 15 seconds I can ever remember did I hear the fireworks: the eight miles between me and the fireworks had caused the delay in the sound reaching me. The flashing was just the distant light of the fireworks playing on the trees.

Well that's out of the way for another year! Alf Don't forget there's still Diwali on the 11th, and there'll be fireworks for that. Mind you, not as bad a during bonfire night. Our foxes didn't appear for two days after Guy Fawkes night, and there were still bangers going off last night, too. I wish that fireworks were only limited to the professional displays- the ones they sell in the supermarkets seem to be just loud explosions going off in the gardens all around us...gets to be a bit much by 2:00 in the morning. I also worry about one coming down still alight and setting fire to the shed.

Apparently lots of large events here tonight and when I was out on my early morning dog walk I saw another banner advertising a firework display Friday 13th! At this rate they will just carry on all the way through to New Year.
I agree too that it should be organised displays only - preferably on Bonfire Night itself to stop them going on over a 3 week period.

The article says that "A sky lantern was identified as the cause of the Smethwick recycling plant fire last summer, which ignited 100,000 tons of plastic and injured 10 firefighters." I didn't know that! uh, oh- the bangers have started up yet again over the road.
