Mark Knopfler A long time ago came a man on a track walking thirty miles with a sack on his back and he put down his load where he thought it was the best made a home in the wilderness. He built a cabin and a winter store and he ploughed up the ground by the cold lake shore, and the other travellers came walking down the track and they never went further, no, they never went back. Far better, IMO, than many tunes that can get stuck in the brain. Dave

I watched a programme on BBC iplayer, about Jeff Beck well worth it the usual swearing from the ''rock stars'' but brought back memories of just how good the guy is. Here's a haunting taste ian

Not the greatest musically but a trip down memory lane for me. The Scaffold - a comedy/poetry/music trio from Liverpool consisting of musical performers Mike McGear (bro of Paul McCartney), poet Roger McGough and comic John Gorman. First saw these guys in a lunchtime performance at a tiny venue in L'pool where myself and a couple of 6th form friends were either skiving off school of filling time during holidays. Later saw them at the Liverpool Philharmonic Hall with The Bonzo Dog Doo-Dah Band - and a highly enjoyable evening that was. www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjnkmNyArNgwww.youtube.com/watch?v=2x8D4T--0v4Alf

Some more good ones here. Always good to here Mr Knopfler.
Oddly enough yesterday I was reading about the late Charlie Gillett. He was a DJ, musicologist and his 1970 book - The Sound of the City: The Rise of Rock and Roll - is a highly regarded history of Rock and Roll. In the mid 1970's a band sent him a demo tape. He liked it and played it on his show. Apparently as the the song finished the studio was being called by a number of A&R men asking about this band who were playing, "The Sultans of Swing"
I must try to get into Trout Mask Replica again, Alf. I know some composers regard it as a masterpiece but I find it difficult.
