Walked a local spot to work this morning and had a Shaded Broad-bar, a couple of Yellow Shell and lots of Agriphila straminella.

Had a red letter day at a site today. Saw my fourth Hummingbird Hawkmoth of the year (previously 2 in my garden + one at Denbies hillside), this one feeding at Jasmine flowers.
Normally this would be candidate for my MOTD but today usurped by a beauty I spotted flying around. Looking like a bright vanessid in flight I instantly recognised it as a Jersey Tiger- the third consecutive season I've recorded this species at this site near Wandsworth Common in south-west London + presumably breeding in the area.

That's two very nice moths, aeshna5, lucky you!
My MotD was the Endotricha flammealis that was in our kitchen this morning.

Excellent aeshna! I've only seen one HHM this year and that was south coast. Last 2 years I have had one at the house, so maybe in the next few weeks MotD for me this morning, a pretty little Crambid was one of 3 new moths for me - Catoptria pinella. Least Carpet and Bryotropha affinis were the other 2 lifers, and Udea lutealis NFY. Nige catoptria pinella by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

I was working in North Wembley this morning + a moth flew out of a hedge + landed on the road beside me. It was a pale sandy colour + from its markings I recognised it as a migrant Bordered Straw- I think my first.

The local population of Bordered Straw will be emerging around now, so you may have gotten a resident one Nige

However the home bred ones are darker + this was very light, typical of southern clime ones.

My best ever year for Hummingbird Hawkmoths. As we walked back home after visiting my local patch I spotted a HH hovering around a privet hedge down my road. It seemed very interested in this hedge but I'm not sure why as there were no flowers on it.
Otherwise a couple of Mother-of-Pearl in the garden.

Always nice to find a Hawk-moth in the trap. I also had one the other night but it was pretty much dead. Several of the moths were, I'm wondering if it's to do with the 44 wasps that were in there too!
