Beginning of June things looking hopeful, quite a few green-veined, 1 peacock, 1 painted lady and surprise 1 red admiral and a couple of orange tipped. Not seen any since nor any moths, so at the week-end did an inspections of plants and trees - no caterpillars, not even in the veg patch. I think our bad weather this side has had a devastating effect. The masses of birds and fledglings are going mad at the feeders and some are doing amazing aerobatics trying to catch insects. On the plus side there are a fantastic amount of insects. I am glad that so many of you are seeing lots of butterflies and moths southwards, at least they are doing well in some parts of the country.

Pretty good season for many species here in the south. Last weekend had 21 species locally on the outskirts of London + a butterfly trip in Surrey this week had 26 species. Today has been the wettest day for a few months.

Some of our butterflies in Derbyshire are taking their time to appear this year, very few Small Copper or Painted Lady yet, Small and Essex Skippers are only just starting to increase in numbers but are still well below norm. However Meadow Browns ,Ringlets and more recently Gatekeepers are out in good numbers. If we can just get rid of this cloud things may be able to pick up - looks like today will be another butterfly free day though. I look forward to some sun.

A bit of sun today although not lengthy spells unfortunately, but I had a wander in the field for 15 minutes and did see 4 Small Skippers and 2 Small Coppers amongst others (including a 5 Spot Burnet) so the sun definitely helped - tomorrow I suspect won't be as successful!

August and apart from a few early season Orange Tips and whites, and single sightings of Red Admiral, Comma and a Sm Tortoiseshell there has been a really poor year. In fact there are very few invertebrates at all to be seen.

We haven't had a good year in north Colchester very few around. Nettle beds in Highwoods Country Park haven't had their usual Small Tortoise shell caterpillars. However there seems to be a bit of a movement of Painted Ladies northwards over the past couple of days.
