I know I am guilty of not having a look at the board regularly, and I am saddened by the lack of activity because I'm not a fan of Facebook etc., even though I use it.
My problem is that I need a prompt to go and have a look at this web-site and that takes time and already I spent more time o the net than I can really justify.
With WAB I got notification of all new threads in the half dozen directories in which I was interested. It was easy peasy.
I can't see a way of starting this and thus I really don't think I will be having many looks; the WAB facebook group pops up with new items and I access facebook most days as I need to anyway for a checking on a poorly person.
Sorry folks.

You can do this in Profile > Edit Profile > Notifications.

Yes, and I have done that, but it doesn't notify me of new messages (ideally in chosen fora), for which I have to log on.

I got used to finding where interesting posts were. It took a while, but got there.
However, I don't use WABI so much now. I wanted a forum for was to record my wildlife activity. I was always referring back to WAB. Sometimes I'd post record shots of things I'd seen. If these are to be deleted, this puts me off posting. I'm looking for somewhere solid. I will explore Flickr though.
I also wanted to stay connected with some people that were very dear to me. Some of these guys use FB and Flickr as they are great "togs" (I think that's what they call themselves). They are mainly interested in sites that have galleries or an easy means of displaying and viewing images. For some, this seems to be their life. Or there may be other reasons that they did not join WABI. On FB I can stay connected to them.
So sorry I'm not here much, but I will pop in occasionally.

Hobjob, have you selected the email option in notifications? There's a box with a drop down list where there are limited options. If you have done that, maybe the email is going into a spam folder? Cheers, Ann

I do understand everyone's concerns... when we started this forum, Snowlynx found what he thought at the time was the best solution- a way to try and keep the old Wab crowd together, and also be welcoming to any new members who happened upon us. We didn't realise how limited the attachments capacity was until it started to run out. I've been transferring all of my images over to a Flickr account, (a rather tedious process- it involves going in and editing every one of my posts, deleting the image, uploading it to Flickr and then linking the image back again to the original post a bit long and drawn-out, but it does mean I've been able to keep space free for everyone to keep posting images! What Snowlynx is doing in the meantime is working on a software program that will hopefully automatically upload images to something like Flickr... so when anyone does a post with an attachment, it will be saved as a link, but show as an image in the post, (I think that's how it will work.... and I'm not sure how he will do this, but when it comes to computers he can work miracles This way, we shouldn't run out of space. So far, I've managed to avoid deleting any images at all- I just keep moving mine over, and we are staying within the limit!

Seems we are all looking for very different things from a wildlife forum like WABI. My view is that I don't think a public forum like WABI is the place I would want to keep a personal log of my wildlife activity or store images. I keep a bit of stuff on Photobucket but anything important to me is on my desktop and backed up onto DVDs. I turn off email options on sites like this because an inbox full of notifications irritates the hell out of me - I know where I've posted and will look for responses when I feel like it. I see the value of sites like this in the people who contribute and share their knowledge and expertise and I am truly grateful every time I get an ID for something. I am happy for my images to disappear after a reasonable interval and I still think there should be a strict size limit (as well as maybe a time limit) on images posted. Snowlynx and Rowanberry - I think you're doing a marvellous job but you know what they say about pleasing some of the people...

I enjoy it here, shall not more people are around but hey-ho! Would you guys consider a few of us chipping in to pay for some storage space? That might make the site more attractive if we can setup a gallery. Nige

The trouble with paying with storage space is that (on this forum, anyway) the cost keeps going up as the space gets used up... so the price just increases constantly. What Snowlynx is working on now is setting up a way to store all the images over at Flickr, so that we never run over our limit here in the forum. There might be a way for us to do a gallery here.

Snowlynx and Rowanberry - I think you're doing a marvellous job but you know what they say about pleasing some of the people... Alf I agree with you Alf all my best photos are far too precious and special to place on a forum anyway, the ones that are current are on my hard drive just to make it more convenient but these are backed up on three flash drives along with my other photos. Anything else such as information or my book is printed off as (no electronic device is 100% safe) dvd discs have a shelf life remember and if unburned ones are left in the light these can corrupt very quickly, flash drives can also be sensitive to knocks so try not to drop them! Even the cloud can be unsafe take it from one who knows. I would also like to say that this website may not be as extensive and suit all but I must say it suits me. I also agree that the both Rowanberry and Snowlynx are doing a marvellous job so this is one member who is extremely grateful to them both for trying to reunite its very valuable and interesting members. Ps I am sorry dear reader but I will not be joining face book as this is one medium that does not suit Alan, just call me old fashion! Alan the wandering minstrel

Alan- I'm writing a book as well, (trying to, anyway!) and one thing I do to save it is once I type what I've written into the computer, I then email it to myself as a Word Doc at a Google account I use primarily for that purpose. That way, even if I loose my printouts or the computer falls prey to an incurable virus, everything I've written is still there in my emails. Thanks for your kind words about the Wabi forum!

Rowanberry I am so very pleased to hear you are writing a book too it does tend give one's little grey cells a thorough airing though! All the very best with your writing I still have much more to write and what I have written still has to be proof read as well, it is hard work but so much fun too.
Best wishes in all your endeavors. Alan the wandering minstrel
