Definitely interested, Dave. I have only seen adders twice so always keen to hear of sightings. It looks dark; is it a melanistic one?
Dave
Excellent shot BTW. What is you setup?

No it's a fairly typical looking male after it's spring slough. Melanistic animals are very dark almost black (or completely black) all over.

Thanks Tringa, As Dogghound says, it's a fairly typical male in new plumage. I was lucky with the shot in as much as the animal was on a small bank, raised a couple of foot above my own feet level, and was moving towards me at the time. Interestingly, a female was a couple of feet to the right, and a neonate female was lying alongside this male, so small that it almost escaped my notice. My set-up is pretty old, but as I still get some reasonably decent results (sometimes) I haven't bothered to replace it: Nikon D200 Sigma 105mm macro lens Nikor 70-300 VR telephoto Nikon 600 flash

Thanks Dogg and Dave. I should have guessed as years ago I had an eastern garter snake that always look striking after sloughing.

Just thought members may be interested in this 'portrait' of an Adder taken in South Yorkshire recently Nice shot Dave, love the eye. Set myself a challenge this year to photograph one but no luck in finding one so far. I live on the edge of the Peak District and very close to a site where others have seen them but it's like looking for a needle in a hay stack among the bracken. I'll keep trying as your picture has inspired me to keep at it. European_AdderA4-0044 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

Nice photo............ On a recent walk at Rhossili, South Wales, I saw two male adders. They were about 15 inches long, and surprisingly thin. Alas I startled them so they shot of into the undergrowth PDQ. But did have a good sight of a sleepy female sunning herself. Photo posted here today. The males were as per you photo, brightly contrasting black and white (I only saw them for a second or two)..........
