The colder and snowy weather looks to be getting into northern parts of Scandinavia now, and that, along with winds over the North Sea being a bit northerly recently, is seeing more reports of Short-eared Owls arriving off the sea along the east coast. Both of the over-winter roosts I monitor on the Isle of Sheppey have seen recent increases in numbers; one is now 3 or 4, the other is 9. That latter roost has, at present, 3 SEOs coming out an hour or more before sunset. It will be interesting to see if they change their behaviour to fit in with the after sunset departures of the other 6 in that roost at present. Photo below is of two of the 'daylight three' heading out across the marsh recently; on a typically dull November late afternoon. Feeedback on my Short-eared Owl book, an extensive study in Britain has been very good, and I am so pleased to be able to share my love of these wonderful owls with others. Details kentyeti.co.uk

Brian, that is a beautiful photo- I'm so glad they're doing well and number are increasing. Congratulations on the book doing well! I've got a large writing project of my own going on (fiction) but I know just how hard it can be to keep at it. Especially in your case, having to be out in all sorts of weather. At least I don't have that to contend with.
