Dave, I bought a little book at Dobbies garden centre called What's that rock or mineral by DK books it's a pocket book for beginners, looking through it I found a photo similar to yours, a medium grained rock called "Layered Gabbro" try googling it, there is too much information in the book to write about it. NellyDee, that rock which you started this post with looks to me like quartz crystals. Try scratching glass with it. A positive scratch would strongly indicate quartz (silica)
P.S. Now I come to think of it, they could be calcite because I suspect that vinegar is not a strong enough acid to dissolve calcium carbonate. The 'official' test is to use dilute hydrochloric acid.
