I was out with the dog earlier this morning and as we walked along a path through tall (close to a metre high) grasses and nettles the dog pulled on the lead and was clearly after something. I didn't see it but thought it was probably a mouse or rat. From where the dog was heading whatever it was had disappeared into the grass. Then I spotted a little way in front of us a duckling running away. Fortunately the dog did not spot it and the duckling ran off into the grass.
I've seen a pair of mallards in the area before and assume they have a nest somewhere. Fingers crossed for their survival. If the nest is in the direction the duckling ran then it is about 10 metres from a busy road. I know ducks sometimes nest in unusual places but this duckling was about 600m from the nearest pond with what appeared to be many other similar nesting sites much closer to the water.
