This wee chap was on my patio door this morning (the blue background is reflection of the sky) and was (with my joints!) an awkward image to take. It was very close to but possibly a fraction under 5mm which suggests not a harlequin. The more I look on Google images the more possibilities present themselves - anyone any ideas as to an ID? ladybird by Alf Parker, on Flickr Alf

It's a Pine Ladybird, Alf.

Thanks for that - I'd somewhat discounted the idea of Pine Ladybird since there is a distinct lack of pine trees around here and the Nat. Biodiversity Network map indicates Pine Ladybirds are virtually absent from Cumbria. That said, I see they will happily live on Hawthorn and we have an abundance of those - just about every garden in the area is surrounded by them!
