I wonder if anybody could help me with this? I had just settled into my tent at about 8 o'clock the other night, on the hillside above Strathtay (Perth & Kinross), when I heard a noise I couldn't identify. The best way I could describe it is, it sounded like a crow trying to imitate a dog barking! I've heard foxes before, and deer as well, but I can't think what this could have been. Any ideas?

Possibility a snipe which sort of goes quick fire pop pop pop. Roe Deer do short barks.Or it could be a crow or a jay, which do have a tendency now and then to imitate - mainly other birds though

Yes, thanks for that. I was thinking maybe roe deer (I've heard red deer often enough to discount them). At the time I was speculating the only two possibilities might be either a roe deer or conceivably a badger (!).

Hello Grobbo and welcome to WABI. My thought was also Roe Deer.
