This is obvious but I have never thought about until Mrs Tringa mentioned it this morning. Smartphones have a strong magnetic field and can affect the needles of compasses. I tried my phone and it is powerful enough to flip the needle completely if very close. Even a few inches away it can move the needle by 10s of degrees.
I can imagine someone in difficult circumstances using a compass to find a route and being misled by the field from a phone in a pocket.
