Last year I had several sunflowers come up in one of my flower beds. I left them to flower so the birds could feed on the seed in the Autumn. I assumed the seed had been dropped by birds.
This morning I was watching a Squirrel feeding itself from my ground feeder. Suddenly it left the feeder and crossed the lawn to one my flower beds, dug a hole, placed some seed in it and covered it over. It then went back to the feeder, took more seed and buried it in the flower bed but in a different position. It repeated this one more time and then disappeared into my neighbour's garden.
I now suspect it was the squirrel who planted the seed in the flower bed last year.

The year I tried to grow sunflowers, they grew lovely and tall with great heads... and just when they started to develop seeds the squirrels came and bit big pieces out of them. I honestly thought someone was using my poor sunflowers for target practice with an airgun at first... there were chunks of sunflower heads all over the place! I shouldn't have planted them so close to the fence- it provided the squirrels with easy access. Harold, I think your squirrel is cannily planning in advance for a autumn harvest.
