Hi
I have had hedgehogs in my garden for several years and this year saw three together - one large and two smaller ones. A delight! My coal shed door is rotten at the bottom and a couple of months ago, before my coal delivery, a hedgehog started to next in there. I had to move it so built a little house nearby, moved some of the dry leaves into it and left some outside. These were taken in over the next few days. I used a large bore ceramic pipe as a lead into the house. I borrowed a night camera and hedgehogs definitely went in and out of the house but I could not determine if they lived there! Very recently a growing pile of earth (much like a mole hill - but I have never had moles here and there do not seem to be any in the neighbourhood) has appeared at the back of the pipe which will now be partially, if not wholly, blocking the entrance/exit. Simultaneously, a 2" diameter hole has appeared in the lawn nearby - rats maybe? Does anyone have any ideas as to what is creating this earth pile and should I remove it?
Thanks

Hello Janie and welcome to WABI. I can't think of anything off hand that would dig the holes you mention. It could be rats but I tend to think they are more likely to dig close to outbuildings or close to the edges of paths. Do you have foxes in the area? Can you post a few photos of the pile of earth and the holes and can you borrow the camera again?

Welcome to WABI Janie.
It could be foxes as suggested by Dave. It could also be Grey Squirrel if you have any visiting your garden. I had one dig a hole in my lawn in which it stashed some acorns. A few days later a Magpie dug them up and flew off with the acorns in its beak. I think the Squirrel needs to find a more secure hiding place as long as it doesn't hide them in my patio tubs. Bit annoying that, especially when you find an oak tree starting to grow in amongst the patio plants.
Harold.

I don't know where you live but here it is bank voles that are digging holes all over the place. The piles of earth are usually flattened down after a few days as they come and go down their tunnels
