Passed through part of Epping Forest this morning. I've known this tree for close to 50 years but for a few years the understorey has grown up and around it. It is a long time since I was in this part of the forest and there has been some work done to clear it. It is just a great tree and for all the time I have known it it has looked like this. Dave

What tree is it Dave? I ask because iwas about to post a photo asking if what I was showing was tree seepage. It does look like poo up the tree. The bark on your tree looks to be the same bark. I decided it was not fungi gowing on the tree, as it appears it have gone brittle and the holes in it could be insects. I think the tree is deseased judging by the number of holes showing on the bark. My neice sent the photo which she took at Rutland asking me what the black poo was:) Do you think I am right re tree sap seeping out and any idea what tree? IMG_1062 by Helen Skelton, on Flickr

The tree in my shot is an oak, Helen.
I don't even qualify as a idiot when it comes to fungi but the black things in your photo look like the fungus called King Alfred's cakes.

Found the first of one of my favourite flowers beginning to flower in the local meadows- Grass Vetchling with cerise flowers.
Also new for the season on the disturbed area, Small Melilot + an attractive grass- Annual Beard Grass.

I know they have a diamond-type pattern in the bark like yours appears to... and they are also having a difficult time of it right now, which might account for it being ill.

Has to be the cherry plums around the playing field loads of fruit some sweeter than others, the dark red leaved trees seem to be the sweetest at the moment some of them came home and went in to my yogurt for breaky and the sloes are coming along nicely though I'll not be having them for breakfast ian

Those roots must provide little hiding places for so many creatures... like a warren of little Hobbit houses.

I don’t normally make a habit of mentioning trees, but since Elm played a large part of my youth I’ll make it tree of the day. Alan

Back at Stanmore yesterday- I meant to upload this last night, but was too tired after being out in the sun most of the afternoon... We went in a different entrance to our usual one, and came upon this oak, standing proudly inside a charmed circle of ferns. (Well, it felt charmed- I'm sure the ancient Druids would agree. This elder tree decided last year to spring up out of the middle of our hedge. The landlord was talking about cutting it back but fortunately never got around to it- I've gathered lots of flowers from it so far, and hope to do so with the berries later in the year. Not sure what the neighbours think about it- we might need to trim it back a little come autumn so that they don't decide to chop it down altogether. Elderflowers May 2020 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr
