This was on the top of a log which is 75cm tall. The most obvious candidate would be pine marten. They sit on the log to eat and sometimes to move to and from bird table and wall. However, I've seen what I believe to be pine marten poo and it all looked much more like the photos in books - much larger than this, twisted, sometimes with identifiable bits. As the photo shows this is small and not twisted at all. In addition I have never found pine marten poo near the house - this stump is less than 3m outside the back door. Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks Dave

The most likely seems to me to be squirrel. Have you tried mashing it up in water to see what it contains (bits of invertebrate, plant material)?

Thanks for the reply Alf. Squirrel would be a surprise as we have never seen any around here.

Hedgehogs here tend to leave multiple deposits all around the garden and generally larger in size. The other problem is would they be able to climb a stump a foot high? If it is hedgehog the poo would usually contain fragments of beetle carapace - needs closer inspection me thinks.

You are correct Alf in saying it needs further investigation but overnight it disappeared. Thanks for the input; I should not have delayed and if there is a next time, I will get a grip - well not actually a grip - but you know what I mean.
