Hello, all Snowlynx and I have been discussing ways to help this forum grow, and one of the problems seems to be with the search engines. I believe that most members here found their way to Wabi through postings made either at Deb's Castaways on Facebook, or through a thread at Wild about the World. One thing I can do to help this is to buy a proper domain name and upgrade Wabi... and I've been thinking that perhaps we could still call it Wild about Britain, since there are several versions of the name still available through the site where I host my eco website. The options I could go for would be: www.wildaboutbritain.ukwww.wildaboutbritain2.co.ukhttp://www.wildaboutbritain2.com or .uk I'm not trying to tread on the old site owner's toes, but if this is to grow into a viable, flourishing wildlife community for us all, we are going to need more members, and I'm trying to think of ways to help not only ex-wabbers find us, but new life-blood as well. I don't want Wild about Britain to sink without a trace, and this could be a way to keep it alive. Another reason for a change is that there is already a forum called British Isles Wildlife, (which I was unaware of when I named this site! ) because I was trying to keep the name as near as possible to the old one. What does everyone think about this? Shall we revert to being Wabbers? If so, I could go ahead and buy the domain name within the next day or so, but it will take a bit longer for Snowlynx to sort out the name change online, (he's going camping in the Lake District for four days, so I am expecting marvellous photos to appear later this week in the "Where did you Walk Today?" thread!) I'm interested to know what everyone thinks about this suggestion. Cheers! Rowanberry

I was a WABber for more years than I care to remember. I believe that the original (surviving) membership is currently cast throughout the internet, it no longer resides in one place. The first question people might ask when they find "WAB 2" is what connection the new forum has with the old. The only connections I see are that there are a number of ex-WABbers posting here at the moment, and some of the categories and thread names are similar. In my opinion this is not enough of a connection to call a new forum "WAB".
WAB has or had a massive database and gallery, and thousands and thousands of man-hours have been spent building this. I for one spent many an hour adding to the reference section. If this database has been lost, it is gone for good, as I doubt the volunteers kept copies, I certainly didn't. Some members have sadly passed away. If WAB doesn't come back, I personally would like to be left to mourn that loss, and I mean that sincerely.
I would be uneasy about calling a new site "Wild About Britain". I would vote for a new name and would hope that you build up your own excellent reputation as an internet wildlife resource, from your own hard work.

I would also be uneasy about calling the new site "Wild About Britain". Firstly because I still hope that the old site might return to life sometime, and secondly because the old site is part of a registered charity and I'd feel uncomfortable with a similarly named site that isn't part of that charity.
BTW, thanks again for creating this site, whatever it's eventually called.

There is a 'WAB1" meet this next weekend at Bempton. Being organized by Dave Catt (His WAB1 and Facebook name). There are probably going to be about 15 people present, most of whom are old WAB1 WABBERS.
Others would be welcome I'm sure. I hesitate to give out Dave's phone number without permission, but he responds to facebook messages which can be sent to 'non-friends'.
I will raise the issues and try and encourage a 'return' to WAB2, but as I said in another thread I think that they have found Facebook seductive, especially the ease of uploading photos - I'm a lazy old buffoon and upload very little.
For at least one, Fourwings (Steve Houghton) he can indulge both his passions, Fourwings for his dragons and twowings for his aircraft! And last week his dog too! For a non-aircraft fanatic, some of his aeroplane photos are stunning.
But there also lies my problem, it is impossible to be selective in what one reads and more time is used up - as as far as I can see photos on Facebook are are far less quality than gallery pictures were on WAB1.
With WAB1, I seldom browsed the site, relying on my selection of fora and email notifications to give the information about subjects I was most most interested in.
It would be so much easier to know what to do if we knew what the situation was with Stuart; his complete silence seems uncharacteristic and I do hope this does not mean that he is unwell.
I will try contacting his brother, but my details are quite old. I will report back after next weekend's WAB1 meet.

WAB gallery and search facilities were an invaluable resource, I hope it's not gone forever and I do hope the site can be resurrected. I share the unease of renaming this site as WAB or even WAB2 but it does need to be accessible via search engines - sorry I haven't any great ideas for a name just now but hopefully things will be clearer after the meeting at Bempton. I'm of the opinion that the name Wild About Britain should be avoided. Just stick to What we have, it's just fine and dandy as it is. People will find us, it just takes time.

I think having started it by calling it one thing and then changing it might also cause confusion. I though it was possible to set search terms for a site so that using them eg on Google would link to the site. So "wild about Britain" could just be one of search terms linking to "wild about British Isles". the more it is used the more people will find it. That is what happened with WAB in the first place. Also try and put links to it on as many other wildlife sites as possible.

Would like this site with the same name as others are starting to come on board. A change now would confuse any search ..

Agree with what's been said so far. WAB may be revitalised sometime (I hope!) and would need to keep that name.

This is exactly the sort of thing I wanted to know- thank you ! So we will keep the forum name as close as possible to what it is now... Wabi, it shall be.

I also vote for WABI, for all the above reasons and as it is quite close spelling to my home country initials (Belgium-BI) This is also a good place to ask about the need for a designer and web developer in case for the recreation of a website, where I might come in

I love being called a Junior Member - makes me feel I am a kid. By the way is it like WAB, dependant on number posts? and what is the progression from new and junior.

WABI gets my vote, too. The points made above are valid, changing now could result in confusion.
And, by the way, I did a search for Wild About the British Isles on my phone just yesterday to add it to bookmarks and it showed up top of the list. (And no, I don't sync phone with pc, or anything with anything else!)
