Lots of birds at Rainham + lots of youngsters with plenty of goslings, ducklings as well as Redshank + Lapwing chicks. Cetti's + Reed warblers were singing everywhere. I did see a stalking Heron take a young Coot + was then attacked by a Canada Goose but the Heron flew off with its prey pursued by Redshanks.
My highlights were several Little Egrets, a Greenshank, a couple of Bearded Tits flying by the path + a pair of Marsh Harriers.

A male Greater Spotted Woodpecker on one of our bird feeders this evening. I saw a juvenile here a couple of weeks ago, I think this is only the second visit from a GSW this year.

The two fledgling Dunnocks that have been hiding out in the elderberry bush at my back door. Could hear them being fed all day yesterday and this morning they've both made an appearance.

My BOTD is the humble house sparrow. My tiny garden was buzzing with them today. There were at least 30. I'm so glad they are doing well round my way.

Yes, ours are doing well, too- yesterday a small flock were busy picking up the millet I'd scattered on the path for them, and this morning they were cleaning up the seed I dropped while filling their feeders.

Had a lifer over the holiday with the Purple Heron at Lodmoor RSPB, but think it was trumped by the female Red-footed Falcon feeding directly over my head at Wareham Nige

Not much to choose from today from a very windy lunchtime, but watching the Swallows over a newly discovered 'work patch' was nice to see.

A great dog walk this morning, meadow pipits, sky larks, 2 kestrels both hovering together but my favourite today was a curlew, pecking in the grass.

Starlings for me today. Loads in the garden. Lots of youngsters demanding food and making a racket.

Some interesting behaviour today. We were moving slowly in our vehicle down a quiet leafy residential road near Hampstead Heath when a Jay caught my eye swooping around in the air in front of us though fly catching. As I looked more carefully I could see it was in fact trying to snatch a recently fledged Blue Tit from the air. The youngster managed to avoid the first couple of attempts by the Jay. I didn't see the final outcome but I suspect the youngster didn't survive.
Many years ago I saw similar behaviour from a Jay that successfully captured a House Sparrow fledgeling from the air.

Watched the Severn estuary at lunchtime in ridiculous winds. Got a couple of Gloucestershire ticks with Gannets and Fulmars past. Unfortunately no Skuas Nige

Has to be this starling fledgling enjoying the paddling pool, (a plant pot I put inside the bird bath for the sparrows) before daring the deeper water.
