We went for a short walk today around Bowyer Water, a small-ish lake in Lee Valley Park, Hertfordshire. It was HOT for September, no breeze and not many birds except for the Canadian geese, swans, coots, and a few grebes out on the water, (the most sensible place to be on a day like this!) and a couple of long-tailed tits flitting about among the haws. I collected a handful of massive acorns to put on the bird table as a treat for the jays...they were much larger than any of the oaks near us produce, so I hope they appreciate it. (Our jays can be fussy creatures- they've taken to tossing any monkey nuts that don't meet with their approval onto the ground. Lovely place...we hope to go back in the spring again. Like the swan RowanB; a good reflection and any shot of a long tailed tit is a bonus. The Lee Valley Park is a bit of a gem, lots of habitats so close together and close to urban centres but a lot of it always feel very rural. Today I had walk in Flowerdale which is a small valley inland from Charlestown Harbour, Gairloch. Virtually nothing in the way of wildlife apart from some dragonflies and the call of a distant raven, but what a superb day - Dave

This was yesterday and I did not really live up to the title of this thread. The "walk" was about half a mile but I wanted to catch the last of the sun on two great hills. Liathach and Beinn Eighe from the Ling Hut Dave PS Can anyone tell me how to insert an image that appears full size rather than a small image that folks have to click on to see full size? Sorry for the bands in the sky where I joined the shots together - any advice on how to remove them will be appreciated.

Use an image host such as Photobucket, and then use the *insert image* tag at the top of the full reply box. This is where I walked today, but the photo is older.

Thanks Ayjay, don't know why I haven't used Photobucket to post images here as I have had an account for years. Dave

If you have a photo editor like Photoshop, it's possible to blur the faint white lines that way...or there is a clone-stamp tool that works well, too. If you don't have Photoshop, there's an online free editor called Pixlr...it takes playing around with, but it's also quite good. (Whatever you do, save your original! I've made that mistake before...make a copy, and then edit that. Just in case things go wrong.) pixlr.com/editor/The blue tool is the tear-drop shape, and you can alter the size of the 'brush' using the selection options along the top.

Thanks Rowan. For more complex editing and processing work I use GIMP which usually does the trick, but somehow I just could get it do what I wanted this time. I'll have a look at Pixlr.

Had a walk close to sunset tonight. These were taken from Meall na h-lolaire (which I think means round hill of the eagle, but please don't quote me on that). This is another one that would qualify for an easy walk with great views as it is less than half an hour from the nearest road but the views take in the Torridons, part of Skye, Harris and Lewis, and the hills towards and close to Ullapool. What a stunning view, Dave- especially your second photo. It's certainly a majestic landscape...and nice clear skies you're having there, too! Gives it all that lovely golden light.

We are definitely bit more than blessed here with this very close at hand, but it is really the same in any part of the UK countryside.
There are probably less than 10 English counties I haven't visited and my knowledge of Wales is not great but in every area I have visited there is always a view to be more than happy with.

Dave I have to agree Dave the Uk has many superb places to visit including here, from the RSPB shop one can take to the hills or drive or walk round the lake, the far end is particularly beautiful with a shaded dale like area and stream that runs up in to the hills ending in a small waterfall. Ravens and peregrine falcons can be seen in this location as well as other raptors. In spite of what one might think we have never seen a lot of tourists here so if a peaceful day’s bird watching is your bag or you simply just want to take in the views I can highly recommend it. That looks like a beautiful area, Alan. It's been several years since we've been to Wales, and it does have some lovely countryside.

Just up to the top of a nearby small hill. The last time I did this was in November and on a much better day (the photo then is a few posts back in this thread). Today wasn't a much of a day for walking (arrived at the top as the rain really got going), but very much for sheltering behind a rock and having a cuppa. After I'd finished my tea the rain stopped and I dried out, so really not bad at all. Dave
