Took a ride out to Flamborough Head the other day beautiful day but not a lot of butterflies about, did get this one though a Wall Brown and a first for me. Lot of birds though and lots of predated eggs I'll post a picture in the bird section later when I've processed them. ''the pictures not the eggs'' ian.

When i was young these were a very common butterfly. Why did they dissappear?

I think that they took a dive sometime in the 60s but can`t be more definite than that. I have had good literature search sinch answering and find that they are only really thriving in certain coastal habitats these days.

I have read that one of the reasons for their decline is due to the fact there were attempting a third generation in a year but this usually unsuccessfully. The only place around the London area where I'm aware they still are is by Swanscombe Marshes to the east. Generally in the south-east + East Anglia it now seems to be largely coastal.
