We spotted this newt on the road (Dukes Pass, Aberfoyle to Callendar). We moved it to the grass verge for safety, taking a few photos while we did. I can't find a matching picture on the internet so don't know what kind it is, anyone know? flic.kr/p/U6ZWDL (Hi-def photo)

It appeared to be ok and did move albeit slowly. We figured it was a newt as it wasn't far from a know newt & frog habitat. You can see a lump at the top of the front left leg and I have just looked closer (because you said you wondered if it was ok) and can see quite a bad diagonal cut across the 'knee' of the rear right leg, also the last third of the tail looks black, didn't notice that at the time but then I didn't have my specs on at the time. There appears to be some scale damage (right side halfway along back). I can see the scales now and the 5 toes on the front legs. Thanks for the ID.

Hmm I wondered if it may be injured in some way, like Dave those that I have accounted have always run off at the slightest movement, in fact ones cast shadow is often enough to cause them to do so.

The cut doesn't appear to be fresh, so hopefully it can recover enough to be ok.
