Popped over to Hutchinson's Bank yesterday & pleased to see a Slow-worm on the path in the shade. Nice to see one not under a tin!

Whenever the sun comes out the frogs like to form a huddle inside the basket where the watercress is growing. I've seen as many as eight or nine piled up... I'm not sure why they prefer this particular spot. Frogs June 2022 by Wabi Gallery, on Flickr

The last few days when I've been watering a couple of ferns at the back of the front garden where it's shaded by the hedge a small Common Frog has been jumping around. I'm guessing it's 2 to 3 years old.

Had to rescue a frog this morning. While I was standing on my front step I could see a youngish cat trying to pounce on something on my neighbour's front lawn. As the quarry jumped I was pretty sure it was a frog. Indeed it was & I was able to catch it in my hands & looked uninjured. It sat in my hand as I carried it through the house while my partner opened the back door.
As I went into the back garden it jumped out of my hound to the ground & soon disappeared seeming none the worse for its encounter! When I returned to the front the cat seemed to be looking for it where it had been.
Later in the day while I was cutting some stuff back I found a different young frog.

Looking out of the bedroom window I could see a little ripple in the water. As there was no wind I got out the binoculars & could see a pair of frogs in amplexus-hopefully the first of many. It looks as though we might get some light rain on Thursday (our first for over 3 weeks), so this with a mild temperature might encourage more activity.

Our pond is looking much murkier than a few weeks ago so I assumed frogs had started mating and then a few days ago I saw these two in the garden(about half a metre from the pond) IMG_20230211_085315181 by Dave Marley, on Flickr Dave

This morning just as it was beginning to get light I looked out the window & could see ripples in the pond. There were at least 5 amorous frogs cavorting, though all disappeared below the water as I put out the bird feeders. It had been a mild but breezy night.

Just counted 7 clumps of spawn in the pond & at least 10 frogs seen yesterday before I went out.

Despite the threat of snow last night I was relieved to see no sign of the dreaded white stuff! Certainly the first decent rain for some weeks with a full water butt (it was half empty). When I went into the garden at first light to put out the feeders still plenty of frog frolicking.
A walk around Perivale Park (about a mile from home) I found c50 clumps of spawn together.

My first native reptile (I've already seen basking terrapins of the year) today. I was looking for some Adder's-tongue Ferns when a small Grass Snake-about a foot long- scurried from the dried bracken where it had been basking until I inadvertently disturbed it.
