Where do they invent these names? Every book I have only gives a scientific name for this which is what I'm familiar with.

I have no idea. It would be nice if there was a common name given to everything, or nothing and just stick with the scientific name, in each genus!

My insect of the day is one (of many) Rosemary Beetle chomping away on my Rosemary Bush. Luckily I have plenty of Rosemary to spare!

At Denbies today the most obvious insects were the butterflies. Very few hoverflies noted with singletons of Cheilosia illustrata on Hogweed, Episyrphus illustrata + Myathropa florea. Most numerous bumblebee was Bombus lapidarius.
I spotted a very active wasp nest just up from a path + watched some workers carrying small stones away from the nest, crawling away with them. I've never seen this before.
Beetles were represented by a flying Rose Chafer, my first Rhagonycha fulva of the season + a mating pair of Cryptocephalus hypochaeridis on Rough Hawkbit.
Going under the viaduct to the pond there were 3 patrolling male Emperors + a female ovipositing, 2 newly emerged Common Darter flew out of the vegetation. Also small numbers of Common Blue, Azure, Blue-tailed + a single Large Red Damselfly.
