Starts this coming Friday: 15th July to 7th August www.bigbutterflycount.org/ please share URL Lets hope there's something to record, my garden sightings have been even worse than last year with barely any multiple sightings at all and only a very small number of single butterflies on the wing, even Speckled Wood numbers are down.

It's been very poor here too. I'll do it somewhere: last year I picked a nice sunny corner in Holmsley Inclosure with a large Bramble patch close by. It would make sense to choose the same spot again. It can be the wife's birthday treat/surprise on the 17th.

Same here- so few butterflies in the garden but not a great deal of sun. Today's been warm but rather blustery + just the odd sunny spell but did manage 12 species at Bookham but no great numbers; Ringlet the most numerous.

I usually do this too, some sunny days required although to my surprise this afternoon in pouring rain I walked past a Meadow Brown, Ringlet and a Burnet Moth braving it out!

Quite a few Meadow Browns, Ringlets and Marbled Whites on the North Downs near me. But where are all the others I normally see in my garden. Even the whites seem scarce.

I am not seeing whites either, it's been cloudy all day here in the Derbyshire Dales with a couple of light rain spells, a cold breeze so it's only the Meadow Browns and Ringlets out and about. In our garden and field, the numbers of species are down from last year so far, let's hope the weather improves so we get a butterfly bonanza

Just one Meadow Brown spotted today in a two mile woodland walk. Temperature was 15°C, no sunshine. Mostly goodish numbers of Ringlets, Meadow Browns and Large Skippers in the previous few days - and one Gatekeeper seen in my garden, (usually lots of them). It's a strange butterfly year in that some species seem to be pretty much on schedule and others are something like three weeks behind.

We don't get a great variety of butterflies in and around our garden but this year is particularly poor. A distant view of a couple of whites and just 2 small tortoiseshells so far. The guy I stopped from using his strimmer on the field margins a few weeks ago probably hasn't helped (he didn't want his grandchildren "getting nettled") but that hardly explains such a scarcity of butterflies here.
