Well I have joined and managed to use my WAB name as well. Lets hope this site goes from strength to strength and remains hack free.

I was Susan88 on the old forum. I've been following the FB group - and will continue to follow it - but thought I'd sign up here as well. I'm not an expert in any field, just a very interested (fascinated) amateur wildlife watcher and photographer.
Do you want lots of photos of small creatures to fill your gallery?

Thanks for the offer, jay53- but unfortunately this forum doesn't have the facility for a gallery as far as we know yet. That's something we might be able to sort out in the future, but for now we're just going to focus on getting the different topics up and running.

Hello, Jim and Monkey- and thanks so much for joining. "Admin (snowlynx)" is my best mate Dean, who is very computer savvy, (whereas I am not...at all!) and after listening to me complain for weeks about WaB disappearing he did some research and told me it wasn't difficult to set up forums these days. He's done all this for me, and if I run into any glitches he'll (hopefully) help me sort them out. I am keeping fingers crossed that we don't get the hackers and spammers that Stu had so many problems with. I know this site is still very basic at the moment- I didn't want to make it too large for us to keep up with, and I'm trying to remember all the different catagories and topics that were there originally... so many! I just realised this morning that I'd forgotten to do a section for ponds. One option I've not been able to figure out is the one where people get 'Reply to Thread' emails, which WaB did and I thought very useful... sometimes I forgot which threads I'd posted on! I'm going to have to see if this site can do that. It's a real shame about the gallery- there were so many fantastic photos on there...and all the expert advice on WaB that's been lost. It was such an invaluble resource, and I'm really, really hoping it does reappear. I don't know if Debs ever did email Stuart or not, (I think in the thread on the Olympus site she mentioned doing it) but I'd like to know why it's vanished, too. Anyway- I did want to say welcome to WaBI, and hopefully there will be others find their way here soon as well! Sorry, I was replying and then the reply got lost. To cut a long story short, I did email, did not pursue the official channels and in a few months I'll write a real letter to his address instead. I am in no rush as I do not want to make a bad situation worse.

Deb- I thought about emailing Stu before we set up this forum, to try and find out if WaB was going to reappear any time soon. Perhaps he didn't realise how important his site was to us...there is a large number of people out there who are into wildlife, and WaB gave us a chance to be in touch with each other. Not many of my family and friends are, and I often felt like a complete odd-bod...being thrilled when a fox visited or the jays appeared in the morning, but knowing that no one else would be in the least bit interested. (I'm sure we've all seen 'that' look on someone's face... that blank but polite expression that says, "Oh, god, please- not the newts. She's going to go on about newts now." WaB gave us a invaluble opportunity to connect with others who DO care about newts and tads, or hen harriers and hedgehogs...or whatever. Also, being disabled makes it often difficult for me to get out into the truly wild places, but I can still photograph the birds or the frogs in my garden, ask questions if necessary, and have people to share these things with who are also interested. It mattered...quite a lot, really. However, perhaps an even more important thing, (I believe) was the fact that we also brought to people's attention the destruction of wild places, the persecution of raptors and birds of prey, and other environmental issues. These things rarely make front page news, but WaB helped to make sure they were known about- and petitions were signed, letters were written to MPs, and maybe in a small way we made a difference. I hope so. So, if this forum helps to keep our little community ticking over, then I will be more than pleased.

A pity ... never mind! We can post photos for ID though, can't we? Yes, it's still possible to have photos in with your postings... the size is restricted, but it's easy to upload images.

Amazed I was let in, part of the process to register meant I had to prove I was human. OMG! But somehow I managed to get round that which means you've now got a Yeti on the loose here. Anyway, hi to all ex WAB'ers. Really hope this Forum works OK. Bryan

Welcome to the Wild about the British Isles! This is intended to be a (hopefully temporary) forum that will act as a stand-in for the dearly missed Wild about Britain site. It will not be as extensive, but we've tried to create as many of the most popular categories that were on the old site as we could. Please let everyone know! Well done for creating this haven Snowlynx! Another Wabber exile here, such a shame about the old site, quite shocking how much info and history has seemingly been lost. I've only just found this place, probably like others, i've been on other sites, but none are as popular as WAB used to be and therefore there is less conversation. If only the old community could all be in one place, maybe this is the place :-) Goodluck Snowlynx...now where's the pond forum...

Hi everyone, Another ex-WAB member, just glad to see the familiar names here. Joined WATW but maybe this forum will feel a bit more like home. Let's hope for the best. Tbh, on WAB I didn't post much unless I needed info or ID on something (and the response was always good), but I did check the site every day, loved reading it and really appreciated the vast vast amount of knowledge there. Delighted to have found my way here.

Hi everyone, I am another ex wabber. It's so good to be here and see so many of the old crowd and look forward to getting to know some new members. Looks like it will be a great site.
